Friday Cabins #12: Micro Cabin Compounds
This growing trends proves not everything has to be under one roof
_
Ah, another Friday, another round-up of the world’s most interesting cabins from the preeminent source for all things cabins—that’s right, Cabins Etc. As expected, each week we bring you special selections from the digital pages of online outdoor/design publication Field Mag. And for our dedicated Certified Cabin Lover-tier paying subscribers, a very rare fine tuned Deep Dive into a niche topic from the world of leisure architecture each month.
In NYC, Spring appears to have sprung. BUT, you never know around these parts. Here’s hoping. All I know is that I’m in the mood for some spring cleaning, picnics with friends, ready to break out the ol’ bike, and most of all-not be freezing. Hbu?
Today, we’re talking Cabin Complexes. This concept breaks the traditional house into completely separate structures, for your very own live/work campus—because why have one cabin, when you can have three?
Yes, I would like to share Cabins Etc with my design-obsessed friend because they will certainly appreciate it.
🏘️ The Kaggeboda House Is a Mini Cabin Complex in Sweden
In Norrtälje, Sweden, the Kaggeboda House by Andrén Fogelström architects consists of three separate mini-cabins. Connected by wooden decking, the three structures each contain different areas of a standard house-living and dining, working, and the last, a bathroom. Clad in the same materials and following the same form, the mini-campus is a cohesive getaway for the owner, who uses them as a summer escape.
On their exterior, the cabins appear industrial. Blackened plywood is outlined with batten joints and the roof is made of brown sheet metal. Inside, though, the cabins are bright and airy, marked by gabled roofs, minimal cabinetry, birch-plywood paneling, and generous windows—a characteristic seen throughout many Scandinavian and Scandinavian-inspired cabins
👯 This Prefab House, Office & Sauna Set Costs Just $108k USD
Own your very own cabin compound with My Cabin, a Latvia-based prefab company founded by designer Girts Draugs. While their 265 square foot living cabin, 187 square foot at-home office cabin, and 110-square-foot sauna cabin are available individually, the whole set can be purchased for $108k USD.
Each cabin is clad on the exterior and interior with Spruce paneling. Gabled roofs and floor-to-ceiling windows create spacious interiors and additional items can be added to the design, like a second floor, a wooden staircase, cabinetry, and more. My Cabins can be customized as well, for a mini-complex that’s completely unique to you. AND good news, My Cabins are available in the US ;).
